Keep Your dog From Chasing

Is your dog likely to to running after people,autos, bicycles or other moving objects? This could cause problems both for those being chased and your dog. It’s in the nature of a dog to chase since they are carnivorous by nature. This chasing instinct has been utilized by humans to put dogs to work, herding sheep, cattle, and other animals. However, although chasing may be desirable for certain tasks, further training is still needed to make the dog obey commands to cease chasing when desired. Similar to the majority of dog training, this is most effective when the dog is very young.

It works most effectively to do this training in a fence enclosed area. With this method you will stop your dog from having outside distractions as you train him. Remove any dog toys or anything that may distract him before starting.

Attach a leash to your dog, and have him stand at your side. The next step is to show your dog a ball, without letting him play with it or touch it. Take the ball and throw it a distance away from you and your dog, then voice a command like 'stop' or 'off'.Invariably, your dog will attempt to follow or chase the ball, do not allow him to do so, and again repeat the command.’ This will need to be repeated until the dog obeys the command.

At times when the dog obeys, give positive reinforcement by rewarding him with a dog treat. Now, after the dog has learned to obey in your fenced in yard, move your training to some more distracting places, like a well travelled park, repeat the same procedure until your dog learns to obey in various settings. After your dog has learned to obey in a variety of settings, go back to the original setting with no distractions, however, this time do not have a leash attached to him. As always, when your dog obeys, give him positive reinforcement in the form of a reward. Then, you'll need to repeat the training sequence again, with no lead attachment in the various more distracting settings.

Keep your dog leashed until you are confident he won't chase.

Following this simple training exercise will tech your dog not to chase things. This training will effectively stop you from having to be concerned with your dog chasing after people and moving objects when it is undesirable for him to do so. By properly training your dog not to chase, you will avoid situations where your dog causes an accident or incident to occur due to his innate desire to chase.
